Google Search Tricks

So we have been learning how to search more efficiently in the last few posts. How about a few features that Google offers in their search bar.

In the search window try the following:

FileType
We discussed this in the last post on the advanced search, but you can search for certain file types here as well. You just have to know the extension of the file you are using.
Word - .doc or docx
PowerPoint - .ppt or pptx
Adobe PDF - .pdf
SMART Notebook - .notebook

So a search for World War II filetype: .notebook will look for SMART Notebook files on websites that cover WWII that you can download and use in your classroom (copyright permitting of course)

Calculator
type a calculation and press enter. You will see the search results in the window.

Try entering this one
  • sqrt(cos(x))*cos(300x)+sqrt(abs(x))-0.7)*(4-x*x)^0.01, sqrt(6-x^2), -sqrt(6-x^2) from -4.5 to 4.5

Conversion Tool
Convert one unit of measure to another. Make sure to use the word "in"
  • 1 mile in feet
  • 190 c in f
  • 1 gallon in ounces

Dictionary
Type the word Define and then the word you want defined
  • define Internet

Weather
Type the word weather and then the city or city and state and press enter for the 5 day forecast.
  •  weather Lubbock, TX
Time
Type in the location and time for the current time of your search.
  •  Sochi time

Sports

Type in your favorite sports team for game scores, schedules and more.

Stocks
Type in Dow Jones or any Stock symbol to check to see how that stock is doing.

Translate
There is a Google Translate feature, but you can also "translate (words) to (language)" in the search bar.

Check back for more fun things you can do with Google.

If you are looking for one of your students to be the next Google Doodle, make sure to check out their contest where the student can submit their doodle, with a scholarship, and a prize for their school. https://www.google.com/doodle4google/
